Google: Marketers Defeated!

Google is a Marketer Consultant dream. But a dream they might never touch…

I came across an article by Paul Kedrosky about Google strategy. He responds to a Washington Post article criticizing Google ‘buy everything strategy’. Paul strongly disagrees. And me too! I must say. Google will likely double its profit in 2007. Show me where is that bad!?

But more interesting marketing point is to come…

Have you ever seen or heard of a Google Marketing Strategy or Google Marketing Campaign? Well, I haven’t myself.

Rememer how you switched to Google and most important how you got stuck to it?

First, someone told you to try it because… it was the best (even Yahoo thought the same, and still does). Secondly, it was clear and plain and not ads aggressive as Yahoo was (still is… Yahoo front page is a real nightmare to read or locate a piece of information). And that is interesting… Google caught me because, I was not assaulted by all kinds of Ads. And, so Google is the first advertising platform.

Genius strategy, They Think You Are Not But You Are. How did they achieve it? I couldnot say. But what is sure they didnot hire any marketing services and they did not spend any penny (or so…) in brand marketing.

So, it is a good example for entrepreneurs without money to waste in brand marketing services… Focus on quality, Spread the word, and people will come…

A 25 times Return over 6 years, We Can Do It!

Filed under: Investors — gaic @ 1:08 pm

In a recent article, Tom Gardner from MotleyFool shows us how we can hit a 25 times return over 6 years. And, most important how to find it!

It gives 3 rules:

  1. Solid financials.
  2. A non-dilutive board.
  3. Founding leaders with major ownership stakes.

And a capitalisation under 1 billion USD.

What we must keep in mind is the following:

If you want to smell the Gold, Aim at the Small! It sounds obvious… Not so.

I think that ‘small’ is a too arbitrary term to be a serious component of an equity search. Instead of ‘small’ I will consider Innovation. Why? firstly, because it means creation… creation of added value. And secondly, Innovation is synonymous of Start.

So, if we take the first 3 rules and add the Innovation component. We come out with a ‘potential’ success story. Should I talk about Google? or Apple (Ipod)?

Apple was under artificial breathing before the IPod release. Google was even nonexistent.I have an other example in mind. The Who was almost bankrupt before Tommy the RockOpera. Tommy was a pure musical innovation. And a pure financial success story (and still is).

The other point to mention is Innovation could be cheap. A 50 000 USD investment in a Web 2.0 (or whatever you want to call it) start-up could bring millions overnight. Talk about YouTube or DoubleClick.

Innovation donot garanty a 25 times return over 6 years but it certainly assure a great earning potential.
